Policy Positions
Economic Policy
- For government oversight of DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency); serves on the House subcommittee overseeing DOGE
Business & Labor
- Against government regulations on businesses; supports rolling back EPA and other agency regulations, including those enacted via Obama executive orders, and opposes regulations seen as discouraging investment and job creation
Health Care
- Against the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare); supports repealing it and replacing with free-market policies including allowing interstate insurance purchases, eliminating mandates and coverage requirements, encouraging individual marketplaces, and breaking up insurance monopolies
Environment
- For domestic energy production; supports lifting restrictions on offshore drilling and investing in domestic energy resources
- Against the EATS Act, which would have invalidated state and local agricultural laws including farm animal welfare laws; opposed it on states' rights grounds
- Against cloud seeding and weather modification; co-introduced a bill to ban government cloud seeding
Civil Rights
- Against abortion rights; proudly pro-life with a 100% Tennessee Right to Life rating, sponsored state constitutional amendment to protect unborn life, and opposes taxpayer funding for abortions
Voting Rights & Democracy
- For government transparency; supports increased spending transparency, introduced the TVA Transparency Act of 2019 to open TVA board meetings to the public, and opposes taxpayer-funded health care subsidies for members of Congress
- For congressional term limits; sponsored term limits legislation in Tennessee and pledged to support term limits legislation in Congress
- For banning congressional stock trading; co-sponsored the Restore Trust in Congress Act (H.R.5106) to ban members of Congress and their spouses and dependents from owning and trading stocks
Immigration & Foreign Affairs
- Against illegal immigration; supports enforcing existing immigration laws, securing the southern border, building a border wall, and sponsored legislation imposing penalties on those who transport illegal immigrants
- Against the Iran nuclear deal; supports its dissolution and the return of economic sanctions against Iran
- For strong U.S.-Israel alliance; supports Israel's right to defend itself and moving the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem recognizing it as Israel's undivided capital
- For repealing the 2002 AUMF authorizing military force against Iraq
- Against expanding H-2B visas; voted against the Further Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2020 which would have nearly doubled available H-2B visas
- Against prohibiting ICE cooperation with HHS to detain or remove illegal alien sponsors of Unaccompanied Alien Children; voted against the Consolidated Appropriations Act (H.R. 1158) which included such a prohibition
- For providing military support to Israel following the October 7 attacks
Public Safety
- For expanding gun rights; lifetime NRA member, avid gun owner with carry permit, sponsored legislation to expand gun rights and protect lawful carry permit holders
- Against gun control legislation; stated he sees no 'real role' for Congress in reducing gun violence after the Covenant School shooting, saying 'we're not gonna fix it'
- For criminalizing possession and distribution of Salvia divinorum; sponsored and passed a 2006 Tennessee bill making it a Class A misdemeanor
