Business & Labor
- For requiring work or job training as a condition of FoodShare (food stamp) benefits for non-disabled single adults
- Against repealing the Wisconsin Equal Pay Act; supported Governor Walker's repeal, arguing the gender pay gap is explainable by marital status differences

- Against the Affordable Care Act; voted to repeal it
Civil Rights
- Against same-sex marriage; spoke in opposition to same-sex marriage in 2009, cosponsored a 2015 resolution to amend the US Constitution to ban same-sex marriage, and cosponsored a resolution disagreeing with the Supreme Court ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges
- Against discussing sexual orientation in public schools; opposed a 2010 sex education law provision prohibiting teachers from promoting bias based on sexual orientation
Immigration & Foreign Affairs
- Against allowing welfare benefits (Medicaid, Medicare) for non-US citizens; sponsored a bill requiring US citizenship to receive welfare benefits
- For restricting immigration; spearheaded bills to address illegal immigration at the southern border

Public Safety
- For concealed carry legislation; co-introduced 2011 SB 93 making Wisconsin the 49th state to legalize concealed carry; believes permits should be issued to law-abiding citizens who pass gun safety courses; does not advocate allowing concealed weapons in taverns
- Against indoor smoking ban; voted against Wisconsin's ban on smoking in bars, restaurants, and small businesses; later introduced legislation to allow hotels to designate smoking rooms and co-sponsored a bill to exempt e-cigarettes from the smoking ban
- For legalizing raw milk sales; vocal supporter of decriminalizing raw milk sales
